That's how I usually know I've made a good song...

When I can listen to it for an hour straight and not be tired of it at that point, I know that the song will turn out excellent when it's finished. It was like that for the last 2 projects that I have done.

I like the expression on the instruments, it contributes to this beautiful feeling, not happiness, but determination and impending triumph.

One thing you could have done is pan some of the instruments away from each other so that each instrument sounds clearer. Many of the instruments are sitting in the middle of the stereo field, causing them to blend with each other a bit too much.

Excellent job, 9.3/10

FairSquare responds:

Ah, good advice! I'm going to do the panning tomorrow, i'm too tired now :P
And really thanks for the 9.3. Means a lot, coming from you :-)
Thanks for the review!

I can imagine how much work went into that synth

This song sounds pretty professional in my opinion. The only thing that I think needs a little tweaking is the bass, which sounds too plain for a song like this.

The drums sound excellent. There isn't much I can say about them.

The lead melody gets a bit over the top around :47 and doesn't seem to flow right with the first section. It flows well with the rest of the song though.

Nice job on this man. Very experimental, and it sounds great!

8.9/10

SessileNomad responds:

yeah the bass had no thought put into it, so yeah i can see why it might be plain

the lead melody was actually made first, i made the first section kinda just to fill space, like i often do...

thx for reviewing man

peace out

Epicness

Although the main and most apparent edit needed for this piece would be an EQ and/or de-essing for the voice in order to get rid of the static.

The only other thing I don't like is how the ?sinewave? is so loud in that one section. It really detracts from the orchestra. It sounds like a pure sine wave, but it has flutelike properties, so I'm gonna go with flute. If it is a flute though, the attack might be too high and the volume is definitely too loud in comparison with the rest of the orchestra.

Other than the above, this piece is pretty damn awesome. The unity of the instruments and the flow is flawless. In fact, this is one of the best sounding orchestras I've heard in a while.

Nice job, 8.7/10!

FairSquare responds:

Yeah, that's a flute you're talking about. Thanks for the advice, i'll lower the volume of it and see what other things i can do to make it sound better :-)
And thanks for the compliment too ^^
Also, i'll see what i can do to remove the static. Thanks for the helpful review man, i really appreciate it! :D

You were right, I did like the beginning hahaha

This song is interesting, very unusual and strange, but in a good way.

I like the beginning transition, it was pretty smooth. The next section was weird also, but not too weird. It was pretty nice in my opinion.

I don't like the transition into the next section at 1:01. It was comparable to fading into a completely different song.

The next few sections were pretty good in my opinion, the only thing about that section is that it wasn't clear whether the time signature was 4|4 or 6|4. Other than that, the section was great.

Nice job, /SN/, I enjoyed this song man.

SessileNomad responds:

yeah i kinda had some thought about the transition at 1:01, but this track was getting sooo massive that my pc was moving at snail speed, so i pretty much just went with what i had and left it

yeah the time sigs were wierd in this one, im not really sure which one it was in this song

thx for review man

peace out

funny, in the beginning, it reminded me of...

Castlevania: SOTN. I think the beginning might be a slight bit too slow. Another thing you might want to consider is adding a little randomization to the synths, like attaching a few LFOs to a few parameters or something. Another thing I might suggest is blending the notes on that synth together much more smoothly than they are right now, because it sounds weird on the first section without the drums.

The section at 1:12 doesn't feel like it fits. It feels like a different atmosphere than the rest of the song.

Other than that, this song is pretty good. Most of the stuff I mentioned was minor, with the exception of that one flute section. This song is pretty good when it kicks up. Nice job, man, and sorry it took so long to leave a review.

7.5/10 Enjoyed it.

FairSquare responds:

Hmm, i never played Castlevania :P
And thanks for all the advices, but i think i won't change this song. I'm too lazy for that :P
Thanks for the review man, i really appreciate it. Better late than never :P

Excellent!

The transitions on this song are simply amazing. The melodies on this song are brilliant. I fucking love this song!

The beginning was pretty good. The ending was flawless. The feeling on this song is a mix between euphoria, peace, and adventure on the upswing parts.

I agree with you when you say that this song is great. I wholeheartedly agree with you.

SessileNomad responds:

YO!

My main suggestion would be to turn down the beep sound in the beginning, and the saw synth in the synth in the section following that, although by not as much as the beep synth.

The ambient section builds up perfectly to the following section, and the chords in that section are pretty unique man.

The following section sounds a bit fuzzy and blended together, like everything's getting a bit too compressed. Ease up on the compressor a bit and lower the volume of the bass and you should be alright.

This should turn out pretty sickening when it's done though, can't wait! Make sure to send me a PM when you're done.

SessileNomad responds:

alright ill be sure to turn the beep down if i ever go back to this

i like the chord prog in the risiing part as well

ill lower that vol as well, i did go kinda crazy on the compressions in this track

great advice, at least your honest with the 7

peaec out man peace out

Very short WIP is very short

At first I was like chillllllll

But then

I smiled and bobbed my head.

I like what you did with the last chord in the sequence. At first, it sounds weird, but it grows on you. This whole song grows on you. This song is pretty nice though, I like the pianos.

I'd love to hear the finished version of this, man!

Nice!

The only thing that gets me is the oscillating cutoff on the middle section, maybe you can reduce the amount of oscillation on that section.

Peace out man!

SessileNomad responds:

i know it sounds awesome that last chord, its so out of place in the scale, but it still works great

idk what oscillation is so i cant really fix it, but im reformating very soon so i wont be doing any of this any time soon

thx for review peace out man

Hmm......

I was actually pretty surprised when this piece turned out not to be Atonal.

Great mixing of themes in this particular song, I'm impressed by this song, and it's weird how it sounds like a mix between horror and hope/determination, things that wouldn't really fit that well together.

Nice job with this piece, I can criticize not a thing in this song.

A five from me it gets!

JeffHeim responds:

Haha yeah the last piece I wrote was atonal so I needed a break :)

I'm glad that's the way you perceived it because that's exactly what my intentions were- to subtly foreshadow the coming of ghosts of our own existences, while the rest of the piece is overall very uplifiting, representing the lives we live.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

What the hell, man!

Just when I thought I was getting good, you come along and trample all of that!

Hey, take that as a compliment, this song is probably one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard on newgrounds. The attention to detail, the articulation, the atmosphere, everything about it screams beauty and skill.

There are so many questions I want to ask you about your career, like how'd you get started, how much do you make on average, what the hell you're doing on newgrounds hahaha

Usually I write reviews to give tips to artists about what they can do to make their song better and more appealing, but this song is so above my level that to do so would lead me to nothing more but meaningless nitpicking.

Well done, I'm in awe.

nathanallenpinard responds:

"how'd you get started?"

Basically I started writing music for my mother's arrangements of christian songs. Played all the way through church, high school, and eventually did an album. After that in college I wrote orchestrations for string ensemble. But as far as getting into the net scene? Post your availability on indie film, indie game, and machinima forums. Machinima is a great deal where I got most of my experience.

"How much do you make on average?"

The amount per film can be anywhere from 200-500 for a 10minute film. However, making a living doing that on the net isn't possible. There just isn't enough business and people with the cash to pay for a hobby project on the net. So it does not end up being a living. Right now I'm working on getting games experience, so I can app to a startup company that already has funding. However...I need the resume credits to do so. So, as much as people may think, I'm not rich, nor do I even have the income equivalent of a PT job. In fact, I'm looking for a normal PT job now.

"What the hell are you doing on NG?"

Remember the gaming experience I needed? Anyone wanting to use one of my tracks in a flash game is quick and easy gaming experience. Everyone here should note flash games on their resume, as they are bigger than you think. Plus, it's hard to stay through a gaming project that isn't funded and actually have it finish. They mostly fizz out, leaving you high and dry, looking for another project. Use of an already produced track on NG, helps skip that annoying headache.

Thanks for your review.

If you ever wanted to make high-quality music with low quality inexpensive shit, I'm the man to ask ;-)
