I'd imagine that this song took ages to finish

I'm gonna review this as I go:

0-30: Excellent beginning
-1:00: Maybe a few too many competing high frequency noises, but that adds to the feeling, I'd have to say.
-1:30: The rumbles of the drums and the sinewave beeps, as well as the chord choice, well, everything, contributes to this awesome feeling, I love it.
-2:00: The piano is nice. Really nice. And the blending of that weird isolating sound was odd but very much welcomed.
-2:30: When the basses started up, it was pretty terrifying, I'll admit. Extremely unexpected. The chords were surprisingly dark. The drums are a little hard to hear.
-3:00: The strings sound beautiful. Nuff said.
-3:30: Violins can now be heard. Their melody makes it sound like a powerful drama song. Still lovin it XD
-4:00: Now kind of uplifting. The variance is amazing also. So far, I have nothing but praise for this song.
-5:00: Chord change was flawless. I like how the pianos returned. The violins are once again still beautiful.
-6:00: That Dbass sound effect is freaking creepy. I detect some leitmotif??? The new drumbeat was kinda weird though, although not completely unwelcome.
-8:00: I like the power of the brass ens that started at around 7:00, and the foreboding of the chords around 7:30.
-end: wow, you really did sneak that chord change on me hahaha, I didn't even notice until I flashed back to the beginning and listened to the chord that was there and realized that you had returned to the original chord hahaha

All in all, this is one of the best compositions I've heard on newgrounds, and I feel privileged to be leaving a review on this, as well as glad to have boosted the rating of this song to 4.20! The mixing on this song was excellent, the instrument choice was amazing, and, well, everything about it was pretty much amazing! Check yer PMs, I'll be adding this to my collection!

Oh and don't think I didn't notice that you added Warrior's Quest to your favorites. I did, and I am eternally grateful. Words can't express how happy I am to see that :)

paradoxphenomena responds:

Replied You through PM. Thanks again.

Nice, the feeling is awesome....

I'm not a big fan of the sliding flute sound, nor the sinewave beep, nor the transition method into the A-minor section. The a-minor section was pretty much flawless though, I loved it.

Excellent mix here, I can hear every instrument almost completely perfecly. The drums, as always, are enviably nice, the chord choices were pretty damn good, it's very very nice.

Nice use of dynamics, I see you've improved greatly on that front *thumbs up*

That last section feels particularly powerful, especially when the brass instrument comes in, I just want to say. At least, it was powerful and emotional to me.

Really nice job on this. Excellent, really!

FairSquare responds:

Thanks!
I think i made a few mistakes in this song, but i only learn from the mistakes that i make.
I really appreciate the review so, thanks again :-)

MH16

roflcopters flying around

The crashes aren't too bad, they just lack punch. Maybe a little more dry signal is needed.

I like the chill ambience. The background ambience adds depth to the song too even though you used the I-VI-III-VII progression in the beginning, that everyone else uses. Oh well, there's a good reason everyone uses it hahaha

I predict that this song will be unbelievably amazing when it's done. Make sure to send me a PM when it's done!

SessileNomad responds:

lol thanks to my keyboarding lessons, i actually know what your saying now with the I-VI-III-VII stuff

BUT, my pc has(as i guessed) started fucking up again, so it should probly be a while b4 its done

thx for review, ill def add more dry to the crash, and probly time it better, cuz i remember doing somthing stupid with the timing on this one

Yeah, I definitely hear a bit of clipping....

in the left speaker.

I noticed you used a minor Ist instead of a minor 4th as your base chord. This isn't because of what I said, is it? Cuz I would hate for that to be the case. I was just making a comment about how you separate yourself from the pack.

Also, excellent drumbeat, as always.

Things I would do personally are these:

- I noticed that the piano bassline and the low piano melody were generally on the same octave. I would separate them by one octave to keep them from blending together.

- The section around 1:19 has some powerful strings. I personally would have saved them for the last section for the big big finish.

Other than those, this song is pretty damn good. I like it alot. And I'll be adding it to my favorites. Good job MH16!

FairSquare responds:

No, it's not because of what you said.
I don't even know what minor and major is :P
Oh, and look out for tuesday, i'm releasing a new song then and i think it's pretty cool :D
Thanks for the review!

Second attempt at a review hahaha

First time, I ended up hitting the backspace button and it sent me back a webpage.

Anyways, I was saying that you two did a really great job. The synths are well-designed and well-placed. The bassline is sickening, and the melody is great. There are a few things I do want to mention though:

- I noticed a few sytrus presets, I definitely heard the rich string ensemble and I recognize that one that you used for the bassline around the 2:10 section.

- In the aformentioned section, when that one FM synth kept hitting diminished 5th/augmented 4th (not sure which one, I just know it was a Bb note) even while the bassline and melody were going by perfect 4th and perfect 5th.

- I don't know if this was purposeful, but many of the section transitions are a little too sudden. It might be good to insert little drumbeats right before it jumps into the main beat, like transition beats. I think they might be called breaks, but I'm not an expert on music language, especially in regards to drums.

That pretty much sums up my review, this was a sick-ass collab you two did!

YouriX responds:

Wow! thanks for the music theorie tips i'll sure to tell MH16! And yes i like using sytrus synths! they sound really cool! And yes there where a few things that i rushed sometimes i get a little lazy :P
And thanks for the comment man! You can always pm me your newst songs if you want!

Well, everyone already pretty much covered what I

wished to say in my review, so I'll cite something that I didn't see in the comments section, and that's transitions between sections:

Some of them feel too sudden. Way too sudden. Ways to help that is, for example, have the staccatos that were playing in the previous section hit one final note in the new section before ending.

Other than that, great piece. Very well mixed and mastered. Very enjoyable!

silencefreedom responds:

Actually I created two or three separate section of melodies then mix them together. I knew the middle parts were sound a little messy.
Thanks for the comments a lot!:)

Nice! Me likee!

Funny thing is that I like the beginning the best though hahahaha

Something about that beat is sickening. Maybe it's the energy it has. Maybe it's that little synth that comes in around 0:41, maybe it's that noise synth where the cutoff keeps changing.

In the second section, there are some things that could be adjusted a bit:

The main synth could be turned down a bit. It's just a bit too overbearing. Furthermore, that last melody's individual attack points should be brought out a bit more. For those parts with the fast attack, I would consider shortening the length of the note a bit, so that the note isn't coming back in right after another one leaves, especially since there isn't much decay, if any at all, on the synth.

I like the variation on the drumbeats on the end. Well, I have to say, I like the drums especially in this song.

All in all, I have to say that you're getting better and better as you go. One of my favorite things is to watch someone grow and improve.

And to answer your question, I actually did finish something. It's already on my profile. I decided to call it Revolution X, since it just sounded like a cool name.

Oh and I forgot to mention, nice name choice for this song.

SigmaSpore responds:

i like watching people improve too

i actually tried real hard on the volume on the lead synth, but i think i actually am gona go back and lower it later on

ill check out ur track as soon as i can

Man, that's not cool....

Think about this: the guy below my review spent a good deal of time reviewing your work. There was nothing obligating him to do that, he just wanted to help you become a better artist, which is what all us reviewers wish to do for the reviewees. And considering that reviews are pretty damn rare in the audio portal, it would do you well to at least respect those who took the time to review your work, like myself. And you're not getting a pass on that just because you're one of the first artists I added to my favs. And consider this: A 6 is an average score. It sounds low, but it's just average. He might be a tough grader, or something. But what right do you have to determine what score your song should get? You posted this song here to be evaluated by the public, so take what the public gives you.

Now onto the actual review.

0:20
Not the greatest transition into creepiness. It faded into another chord, which made the song sound off-key and out of pitch. Furthermore, the dbass melody just didn't feel right to me though. The following section did make up for it though, and it did sound epic.

1:12
Nice violin melody, it sounds sickening, and the samples are excellent for that.

2:26
Just a little too sudden of a cutoff of the melodic instruments.

2:50
That trumpet melody is too sudden. Wayyyy too sudden

Ending was okay, not great. I would give that a 5/10 if I were grading the outro by itself.

Overall, there's just one thing that this song is missing, which is really epic bass drums. I recommend going to Soundfonts.darkesword.com and downloading the Roland Orchestral Rhythm soundfont. I know for a fact that Sf2 files would work with Gband. You will not regret it one bit, I guarantee it. In addition, the melodies were well crafted, the song was well-mixed, and the samples are pretty good for Garageband.

8/10 and 4/5.

masterjiji responds:

well, hate to complaun, but this one has been in the works for four months, while average for me is a month to a month and a half. meh, i guess i was just expecting more positive feedback from me first reviewer rather than a general "thisistheworstthingyouhaveeverdone" message.

As soon as I clicked the song, I immediately.....

recognized the style. You're one of the few people who use a minor scale with the 6th raised one step.

You gotta bring that bass drum out a little more, even with my bass-boosting headphones, it's pretty hard to hear.

Also, you've gotta do a few more articulations with the bass synth. Remember the chord and just have the bass jump to notes in the chord for short bursts. But thinking about it, with a bass like the one that you used in this particular song, the best thing might be for it to have a simple melody like the one it has now.

That melodic synth was kinda blended in the background. You might wanna increase the volume of it a slight bit. Just a tad, when that arpeg synth is playing.

Everything else is in order. Nice job, especially considering that this isn't your normal genre.

FairSquare responds:

The first thing you said, about using a minor scale with the 6th raised one step, is that positive or negative?
I'll work on the bass drum and the other things you said and i also want to thank you for your review. I'll review your song when i'm back from school :-)

It's alright

I would recommend putting a little bit of reverb on that background chord, so that the fact that it was sampled isn't so noticable. Furthermore, I would recommend raising the volume of the background track a bit more so that the lyrics blend in better with the whole track.

Furthermore, I would recommend boosting the drums. At the moment, the only clear drums are the bass drums and the main snare. Everything else is hard to hear.

Other than that, this track is alright. Flow is good, lyrics are good, everything else is set.

You wouldn't mind reviewing one of my newest tracks in return would you? I would appreciate that.

BOOMBLAST responds:

i appreciate that dawg, but the tracks already out there for distribution, so there not much i can do now, but safe anyways, yea dont worry i'll hit you up in a hot minute, peace.

If you ever wanted to make high-quality music with low quality inexpensive shit, I'm the man to ask ;-)
