You are redefining the DnB genre with this song

This song sounds so unique. The choice of instruments and the chord progression in certain parts of the song contribute to this greatly.

Good mix with the drums. The drums sound really really good.

The ending should have had another low piano key hit instead of ending with just the high pitched key. That would have been a smoother ending.

With the exception of the above-mentioned end and a few chord changes that weren't too smooth, this is a damn good song. Nice name too lol.

Keep it up!

peace man

Triumphant, cool as hell, but also joyous.

And that's the most important thing, at least for this MAC. The most significant thing about this song is the fact that it has a surprising amount of variety.

However, one thing that stands out for me is that while it's joyous and triumphant, it's not romantically joyous. But on it's own, without the Mac part factored in, this song is cool as shit. I could strut to this song. I'm tempted to download it just for that lol.

I'm just worried that Darkside won't deem it to fit with the theme of this month's MAC. It happened to many a great piece last time.

I like the sound fx you used in this song too.

The ending was way too abrupt though. You should have let the song slowly settle down, or end with a bigger finish, ya know?

Good song though. And it has an amazing rating too. Keep it up and peace!

Fuiste responds:

Thanks much for the review, I'm always glad when someone likes my music! I also see what you're saying with the not so much romantically joyous aspect of the song... Yeah, it doesn't exactly drip romance, but I was going for a more upbeat approach to the MAC, seeing as just about every entry so far was a slow, depressing love song. Not too joyous. I tried to hit the scenario that I described in my author comments.

But to make a long story short, I see exactly where you're coming from.

In other news, if the sound FX you're referring to are those little 8-bit-ish low beeps/divebombs, then that's just a monotonic, low pass filtered 3xosc. Never underestimate the immense power of that little synth for creating just about everything short of a pad, especially when you realize that it can use the special sytrus and HQ wave shapes in FL.

But I get too caught in my rants...

Thanks for the review!

Nice song overall.

Nice feel in the beginning, had a trance kind of feel to it. It kinda lost that feeling though when the drums came in and the one synth came in.

Furthermore, shoulda used a compressor man! Or you shoulda done the lazy thing and used soundgoodizer, like I do lol.

(just to improve workflow, I try not to use soundgoodizer on my finished pieces, just the soundgoodizer presets on maximus lol)

Anyways, that pad does sound sick tho. Imma tell you what, right before those drums came in, I was damn near in a trance. I could get high to that first part.

Second part, although good in it's own way for a DnB song, kinda destroys that feeling. Shouldve slowed down the drums and softened them a bit for that part. A more hiphop-ish beat with really soft drums would really fit there.

All around, pretty good song. Keep it up man. I know I say that alot, but that's cuz I mean it lol.

SessileNomad responds:

yeah idk how to use a compressor, ill give it a try on my next ambient track

i threw the drums in there bucause most ambient track bore the hell outta me, but yeah i think i should have slowed them down too, but its a tad late for that

peace thx

Only problem is the bass.

The offkey bass is really messing with my head on this one. But I'll tell you what, it really makes the song sound eerie as hell man. I don't think you utilized the bass to it's full potential on this one, and it gave you both the potential to make a haunting piece and a very beautiful piece.

Some tips for the bassline though, you could have switched that synth bass for a staccato string or staccato tuba.

Nice piano solo around the middle. Insane man.

Oh and really nice and let me stress ORIGINAL melody for the piano.

All around though, very entertaining. Keep it up. One more song I plan to check out.

SessileNomad responds:

yeah i didnt go onbeat with the bass here, but im making a song right now quite similar to this that is onbeat, its just that the onbeat was clashing really weird in this one

i dont have any good horn vst's so i dont use horns ever really

lol i hardly call that a solo, but i guess im just picky

thx for review man

What can I say???

Good chord progression
Good synths
I especially loved the piano
This is really a song that you can dance to
The only thing I wish you had done is vary the synth melody more.
GOD those kicks are fucking insane. That's probably my favorite aspect of this song. Those kicks man. I love how they seem to rumble at one point.

I really wanna hear the finished version man. Keep this up!

SessileNomad responds:

yeah i kinda just had sudden inspiration to make this, and i never cmae up with another melody, if i ever do, ill probly work it in there somhow

thx for review peace

Man, you've improved so much with this song!!!!

I remember listening to your other stuff, and listening to this is like listening to a whole new person.

There is one problem though....
That first viola, doesn't follow the chord well. It seems to be following a major chord while the rest of the song is following a minor chord.

Thats the only problem though. Everything else is amazing. I just hope it survives darkside555's list. There was quite a controversy last time, and this song is not particularly romantically joyous, so it may not survive. If it does though, don't be surprised if you do well.

Oh and if you have the time, check out the song I'm submitting. It's called Reunited. It's not done yet, but it will be in about 3 days.

FairSquare responds:

Thanks!
I really appreciate your review.
I'll be sure to check out your song :-)

Excellent!

This is the second entry I've listened to in the Mac9 Jan/Feb so far. It seems that this contest is bringing out the best in all the entrants, as it should.

This song is great, but the only problem is that it may not be right for this contest. There is a way you could have made this song a little more joyous, which would have been to make more use of the major chord. It would have been quite easy to link to c-major from a-minor. Since the song sounds so sad though, it may not survive darkside555's lists.

Back to the reviewing aspect though, there's nothing I can tell you to improve on this song. This song is pretty much perfect, and way above my skill level. Keep up the good work!

broove responds:

It wasn't meant to be happy. In the forum I explained what I wanted to show. And I wouldn't say that it's way beyond your level - you have pretty good songs yourself...
Thanks for the review, mate ;)

1 thing that stands out for me....

the fact that you completely ignored the restraints of bars, beats and such. I think it contributed well to the overall feeling of the piece. I have a feeling that you didn't, but I definitely can't capture the beat, so you did well at concealing it.
it
The emotion conveyed by this song is amazing. It's peaceful, feels safe, tranquil. I don't know if that's the theme you were aiming for though, as you called your song lost. However, that's the theme you got. And the buildup towards the end resembles two loved ones finding each other.
Not much wrong with the song, I just think that the guitar at the end it a little too loud, considering that all the instruments are at full swing.

LK412 responds:

I didn't completely ignore it but i did put some notes off on purpose. And yea i have a tendency not to master my songs so yea the guitar was to loud. Thats the theme i was going for but i couldnt think of a name so i called it that. Thanks for the review. i noticed you didnt rate it. lol.

Have to agree with the person below me...

The ending needs some serious work. The last thing you want is a dull beginning. Honestly, it doesn't really feel like anything is really happening until thirty seconds.

The drumbeat was pretty different after :30. That's one of the things that held my attention in this song. The drumbeat was really creative.

But one thing I did not like was the repetitive sequence of the piano. Not so much the melody, but the fact that it kept hitting that D note constantly.

Furthermore, the guitar doesn't really blend in with the piano well. The guitar is an extremely high-energy instrument, as I see it, while the piano is a very stark contrast to the energy conveyed by the guitar, and vice versa.

And to talk about the guitar further, the entrance of the guitar and it's chord isn't really paved well, even though the drumbeat and the piano melody both enhanced prior to the guitar's entry.

Overall, 7|10 seems right.

fizzypop2 responds:

Thanks for the review man. I also noticed that annoyingly repetitive note and it bugged me for a while. A 7 is good enough for me coming from someone who has a ton of great music like yourself. My band is getting some work done on a decent song so maybe we'll cheaply (due to the cost of a decent microphone and equipment to go with it) record it in a few weeks when we get it worked out and smoothed down.

Good song overall, just a few problems.

1) There's a slight amount of clipping in the song toward the end, when the percussion really comes in heavily.
2) Halfway, the string instrument that's leading the melody seems to take on a weird chord separate from the chord presented by what I'm guessing is a chorus in the beginning of the song.

But I like alot of things about this song. For one, the percussion. For me, the percussion felt like the main part of this song, and it was amazingly powerful. Secondly, the first half of the song really impressed me. It was great. Not so great in the second half, what with the clipping and the loss of chord, but the drums took over in the second half, which was really good. And it had a good ending too.

Detonation3 responds:

thanks for being the first reviewer! Have u noticed how new songs have like 20 votes but not 1 review?! lol

If you ever wanted to make high-quality music with low quality inexpensive shit, I'm the man to ask ;-)
