I like it.

I like how it's sad at the beginning, but moves into a serious march-like tone. It's hard to describe, but I hope you get the jist of what I'm trying to say.

All in all:

Melody and Chords: Excellent. I loved them throughout.
Instruments: Flawless choice, great articulation too.
Flow: Flawless. Nothing more can be said.
Drums: That timpani is ridiculously powerful, I need to start using my own timpani samples like that. Drums are awesome.
Beginning and end: Lumped together because they're both great. Ending could be slightly smoother though, just a tad.

10/10, just want to mention the one song in the related subs section called The Bukkake Udon Song. Lemme say that again, Bukkake Udon Song. Bukkake. WTF?

FairSquare responds:

Wow, did i just get a ten from you? 0_0
Haha, but i have to agree with you on the ending though. It was actually worse when i made it, but i reduced it from 'totally not smooth' to 'could be slightly smoother' :p
And i really appreciate the review :-)
Now i'm going to listen to that song you mentioned, really interested what it sounds like xD
Thanks for leaving a review!

Haven't even finished yet, and I love it.

The problem at :49, for me at least, is the sample or synth choice. But other than that, I can't criticize a single part of this song. It's beautiful, literally beautiful, the way it flows together, the drums (excellent btw, reminds me of Quarl), the chords, everything. I can't give this any less than a 10.

All in all:

Excellent beginning
Excellent chords
Great synths
Great mastering
Excellent drums
Excellent flow
Excellent everything

Just excellent!

SessileNomad responds:

i guess ppl just dont like gabber kicks xD

ive never listened to anything by quarl, that im aware of at least

glad you liked it dude, thanks for the review

NICE!

I enjoyed this thoroughly, this is a nice DnB song.

Excellent beginning and buildup, it flowed flawlessly, and the tempo variances only helped to improve that flow.

Good work with the synths, I don't think there was a single synth out of place.

Melodies were beautiful, as well as the chord progressions and the chords themselves.

Something about that EQ'ed piano is just so beautiful....what inspired you to create this piece? It's so unique.

The ending was flawless, especially with that piano thing, this deserves none other than a 10/10. Nice job, man.

SessileNomad responds:

EQing isnt anything especially crazy on anything really, i took alot of the bass out of the piano cuz the sample i was using clipps really bad when its even got a normal amount of bass

as far as the ending, i dnt think ive ever finished a song in this fashion, with like the tonic chord, ussually i do somthing retarded to try and try and make it sound finished, but im taking music theory this year so im learning alot of shit that is good for anyone to use to make stuff sound profesional

i did try and EQ the drums to really have an impact, thats why the kick is quite bassy, i almost decided to use a gabber kick, and have another synth sidechained to it to use in certain parts to totally take this to a new extreme of glitch/ambience, but i decided to make this more listenable to more people

one thing i might say about the piano, after the phaser part is over and the kicks are in a 4x4 pattern for a bit, i put in a pad that was playing the same notes as the piano, and it totally added a new depth to the piano, it was so odd, but i kept it, that might be what your hearing with the piano

im rambling a bit, so im just gona say thanks for the review dude, glad you liked it, peace out

Well...

Congratulations. you left me speechless. This song is so beautiful, so intricate, so wonderful, words can't describe it. Every single instrument is flawless, it blended so well throughout, I've never been able to achieve this kind of intricacy in my music ever.

The chords were magnificent, each one only lending to the beauty of the song, never detracting from it at any point.

The articulations were on point throughout. It seems like you crafted each and every note to play exactly as you wanted it to play.

Excellent. 10/10, faved, 5/5, this is one of the best pieces on newgrounds. Great job man!

Zero123Music responds:

Woah thanks alot :D

Ahh TAA, I used to troll that asshole...

I'm surprised he's still on Youtube after all these years.

But that's besides the point.

Mastering wise, the song sounds excellent. The words blend very very well with the music. Really, the only suggestion I can make is to turn the melody up on the second half or turn the bass down. Right now, the bass completely drowns that out, especially when the compressor comes into play, although I'm not sure if that's how you want it, or that's how it's supposed to be with a hardstyle track.

I like it though, I'll give it a 8.9/10.

SessileNomad responds:

honestyle i probly should turn down the bass a tad, meh..

for that compressor, i hear alot of hardstyle tracks that do that, but the absolute BEST hardstyle tracks are produced much better, i still got a while to go till i get to that point

lol yeah TAA can be an asshole but i like his vids, makes me lawl

Gravey said pretty much everything...

But I wanna add on to it. The drums don't blend well imho. Perhaps if there were a slight volume drop and a bit more reverb on the drums (just a bit), then they would blend much better.

But I have to say that the melody to this song and the overall composition is awe-inspiring. I have great expectations for the final product.

8.3/10 PM me when this is finished!

masterjiji responds:

i agree with your assessment of the drums. i actually already did that before reading this :)

so do i, dude. so do i.

i shall.

Wow. Just wow.

An all around damn near perfect composition. This is probably one of the most beautiful and brilliant songs on the AP at this moment. Every articulation of the instruments, all the instrument choices, all the melodies, the blending, all perfect.

It stayed interesting throughout, the instruments were perfect, god this piece is amazing. Sorry for sounding like a fanboy, but this piece is damn good. Seriously.

10/10 You deserve it

paradoxphenomena responds:

Thanks BAB Glad you enjoyed it. Its always good to hear compliments from an artist in the same genre/

Gravey is good for good advice....

You may want a fuller-sounding string section, as it would probably blend better with the song.

The melodies in this song are very creative, and I thoroughly enjoyed this song.

Sorry if this review comes out short, I've been short on words for my reviews lately.

There isn't much I can think of to say for this song for some reason. The drums are amazing as always, the piano sounds excellent, and the chords are well-placed.

Now that I think about it though, for about 32 bars (the middle section), you might want to introduce a little variety. For that section, none of the instruments change except for the piano playing a slightly advanced melody. It causes it to get a bit draggy.

Overall, I'd give it a 9.4/10. Nice job man. Like the title too!

FairSquare responds:

Haha, don't worry about your review being too short. That you don't have many words is a good thing, because that means you didn't have to explain what is wrong so much :P
Anyway, i'll look into making the strings more powerful, but i have to be careful that they don't become TOO powerful :P
And i'll try your other advice too by adding a little more variation :-) And thanks for the compliment on the title ^^
Thanks for the review!

That bass is sickening!

And so is that synth, which, by the way, blends excellently with the choir to create this awesome effect in your song.

There honestly isn't much I can say about this song, but I will say this: It's pretty damn good. The transitions, the melodies, the mix, it's all good.

It's a well-deserved 10/10. Good luck in the contest!

SessileNomad responds:

thanx for the thoughts about the bass, its just the BooBass thing that comes with FL

i dont know what you mean by synth though, mabye the guitar?, idk, but either way, thanks

hopefully i do ok in the contest

thanks for the review dude, ima check real quick to see if you have any new stuff

peace

I'm glad I checked this out

Because I'm gonna drop one hell of a review on ya!

Imma start with the beginning, and that saxophone. The saxophone probably shouldn't have had so much vibrato (is it called that on a sax?) applied to it, as it would have led to the power of the song to just have it play legato. Honestly though, it doesn't feel like the saxophone belongs on that particular part. I think a trombone or a french horn would have been better suited for that particular section.

Secondly, I wouldn't say that this is a fight scene, rather a buildup to a truly epic fightscene, that's what it feels like to me personally. It just lacks the overall energy for a full-fledged fight.

I can't knock the drums. They are excellent in more ways than I can count.

This is just an idea, but you might wanna experiment with violin ?crescendos? (again, not sure if that's the right term) in that last part. That feels like it would really fit in that part, honestly.

The melodies and the chords were solid. I particularly liked that aspect of the song.

In the end, when the brassy sounding thing kept playing that low D, it sounded kind of stale. You might want to experiment with that instrument to add a little more definition to it, like attaching a slight filter with an LFO or something.

Overall, this song can use some work. Some instruments should probably be changed or altered, and it feels like new instruments would help to make these excellent melodies and drumbeats shine like never before. I hate being the only asshole here giving a harsh review, but hey, we are the Audio Portal. We show each other no mercy, right?

so, my final score is 7.4/10. This song has a fuckload of potential to be something amazing, though. I may download this and recompose it myself in the future, I like this song that much. Either that, or write a song based on this one.

sorohanro responds:

Thanx for review, quite a long one :)
I tried to describe the feelings of tension before the battle or a battle in a more "theatrical" way than usual "epic" movie imagery.
I don't know what you mean by saxophone, didn't use any... might be the wrong eq-ing of some other instrument...

I'll probably remake it with some more realistic instrument samples, heck, I might record real trumpets myself there :)

If you want to make your own version of it, feel free to.
Cheers.

If you ever wanted to make high-quality music with low quality inexpensive shit, I'm the man to ask ;-)
