Quite the sinister image

Why I listened to this at night, I do not know. All I know is regret now lol

I love that epic buildup towards the end, it's just plain terrifying.

The effort you've put into this piece shows clearly, the creative ways you've used the instruments to evoke your desired emotions is a pure testament to that.

Only one thing: the cello. (that is the instrument, right? I think it is, it seems of the right range) I would recommend playing with its envelopes to get a more realistic sound, I think the release is a little too long and the attack a bit too slow.

BTW, I love that buildup toward the end. Freaking epic and utterly terrifying.

9/10 5/5 and good luck in the contest!

megakill responds:

Hey, thanks for the review!

I'm glad i managed to evoke the right kind of emotion. The worst thing is when you write a song and everyone takes it the wrong way lol.

But yeah, as for the strings panned to the right, i remember i had a tough time even getting them to come out in the mix, so im not surprised theres still one or two problems.
I think for the sake of the contest I'm gonna leave it how it is, to show its an honest first shot, but after, I may possibly re-submit it with all the improvements everyones suggested and see how it goes.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it though!

Nailed it perfectly!

The song sounds simply awesome. Listening to this makes it very hard to belive that you don't write classical very often. Very powerful, with a slight middle-eastern feel to it. Many moods in this one, it sounds extremely cinematic. I can imagine this playing as the main theme of some major motion picture.

Good luck in the contest, and nice job! 10/10

Step responds:

Wow, thanks! Even though I rarely make orchestral, I guess I owe it all to East/West Silver, definitely the best VST I ever worked with.

Thanks again, glad you liked it, and good luck to you too!

The audio is fine, this piece is amazing.

The song fits with the story so perfectly, and the song itself is just beautiful. I love the melodies. In fact, I can sum up this whole song in one word: Beauty.

10/10 dude, you have a wonderfully crafted work of art here.

Jessismith responds:

Wow! You really think so? Thank you so much! That really, really means a lot to me! In fact, your comment just made my day. So thanks again.

You have set the bar high. Very high.

This is awe-inspiring. So well-structured, so well mixed, so well-everything.

Good luck in the contest, though I doubt you'll need it writing masterpieces like this.

And in only 18 hours too!

XayberOptix responds:

Well, looks like I'm the only one in the contest so far (as of 01/07/2011)--so that means I have a really good chance of winning! LOL! Seems like not everyone has heard of the contest yet. I would have expected at least all of the top rated (4+) composers under the Classical genre to submit their work.

Thanks for your review! And look out for the "encore" version. ;)

EDIT: (01/17/2011) There are now more contestants with some really excellent compositions submitted! This will be a challenging competition!

Nice!

Very nice melodies, I'm going to have to look for some work by Thomas Ades to hear it myself.

The drums are very powerful and the rhythms they carry very engaging.

Excellent selection of instruments, each instrument complements the other, something I have yet to master

And your transitions are superb, which is perfect because this song tells a story. I want to stress that; you don't have to look at your comments to see that. The combination of themes and emotions, separated by these smooth transitions throughout, makes that quite clear.

Overall, I like what I hear, I think you have a clear shot at winning this contest. Your instruments are clear, your melodies are impressive, your rhythms are smooth and flowing, and it's a great song overall.

10/10 5/5

Oh, and I wanted to let you know I finished that song Bagattella Di Estate, as I said I would. It's on my page.

ENVISION IS A VERB DAMNIT!!!!

Lol just wanted to point that out.

This song is excellent, especially love the melodies, but the production is great too!
Now let me tack another 5 vote on top of the 4 you already have.

ZachPayne responds:

DAMMIT >_< I gotta rename it now...any suggestions? Preferably another different usage of envision?

Nice and simple

I like how you kept the melody so simple, yet managed to keep it interesting. I just wish you hadn't ended it so abruptly, as it seems to cut off the the last bit of the harpsicord too.

anzki4 responds:

Agreed with the end... Thank you for your review.

All this needs is dynamics

Melodically and harmonically, this song is pretty good. However, without dynamic changes, it sounds stale.

I would also try to bring out the drums and vary up the rhythm a bit more too.

Lastly, I would use different samples, or soften/vary the attack on the strings because everything seems to be playing in basic sustain mode.

Those are the main things that stick out for me. But like I said, the melody is fine.

Kadadj responds:

Tanks a lot for the feedback. Ill try to incorporate these things next time i decide to fuck around in Fl studio.

Moving at the beginning, epic for the rest,

This song is heartwrenching in the beginning, I almost crie- I mean MY BALLS GREW 3 INCHES IN DIAMETER.

Well, maybe not during that part, but I definitely thought I felt some growth when the main melody got underway. Fucking epic, takes me back to the good ol' days of VG music.

This fits perfectly with the theme you described in your comments, and all in all, I don't have an ounce of criticism for this song. Praise? Plenty.

5/5 10/10 faved.

masterjiji responds:

You know, I can't quite put my finger on why I like your reviews so much. Maybe it's because you're in that upper 10% of people who take time with them. Kudos, sir.

Sorry it took so long to check this out

The sound issue might be because of a plugin you might be using. Were you, by any chance, using DSK Strings? If so, that's precisely why, because I've had the same issue arise from time to time. Otherwise, I have no idea lol

I like the melodies and I especially like the drums. The only issue I have with the drums is the cymbal, which cuts off way too short. The melodies are great for this kind of song. I know you were going for the dramatic feel, but it sounds like a chill song more than anything. That's not bad though; sometimes I struggle to get the exact feeling I want to elicit in my songs. I can name like 10 off the top of my head where I completely failed to get the emotion right.

I would listen to some of Basbalfan55, MaestroRage, or Danman87's work for examples of epic orchestra.

The main things this song is missing is Reverb, dynamic, and some EQ on the contrabass. Those are the things that stick out the most.

Once again, sorry it took me so long to check this song out. I liked it though, bobbed my head the whole time I was writing this :)

Oh, and before I forget, at the end, I would recommend you only have the A key on the piano extend the length of the finish, that way you get a clear ending on the bass note.

ProjectStormForce responds:

Thanks a bunch, man. Much appreciated :D

If you ever wanted to make high-quality music with low quality inexpensive shit, I'm the man to ask ;-)
